Born in Montreal in 1923, he became interested in painting at a very early age. In 1949 and 1950 he exhibited paintings in the Annual Spring Exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Montreal. After a solo exhibition at Galerie Agnes Lefort in 1951, he was encouraged by Paul-Emile Borduas to travel to Europe. He stayed in Paris for 3 years where he spent time with Jean-Paul Riopelle and Sam Francis.
